At Phoenix, we’re proud to celebrate our Neurodiverse Team Members.
During Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we sat down with Surya, a Teacher at Neptune School, to learn more about her journey, her strengths, and the power of embracing neurodiversity at work.
Finding her space
Surya joined our Neptune School in February 2025. Though still early in her time with us, she’s already made a big impact.
“I’ve got a lovely class,” she shared. “There are four children and they’re great. I’ve worked in a few schools, but I’ve really found my niche in SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) teaching.”
Surya’s passion is clear. She believes every Pupil deserves a space where they can thrive. It’s what drew her to Phoenix.
“I’ve had so many children in mainstream classrooms who would have really benefited from a school like Neptune. It’s great to work somewhere where the environment is designed for Pupils to succeed.”
A journey to diagnosis
Surya’s neurodiversity journey began when she returned to university in 2020. She was diagnosed with combined-type ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in 2021 after a psychological assessment.
“Before then, I had no idea I was neurodiverse. But getting support at uni made a huge difference. I wouldn’t have passed without it.”
She is now awaiting a clinical diagnosis, made possible through the NHS Right to Choose pathway, which she hopes will offer further access to support and possibly medication.
“It’s been a long journey, but I’m really excited for my clinical assessment this April. It just confirms everything I’ve been navigating for years.”
Strengths in the classroom
For Surya, ADHD doesn’t hold her back, it powers her strengths.
“My hyperactivity is in my brain. I’m constantly thinking, solving, planning. That helps me react quickly in class. If something doesn’t go to plan, I adapt on the spot.”
She’s also become more confident in speaking openly about her neurodiversity, helping to build understanding and support for Pupils who may be experiencing similar challenges.
“I used to hide it. Now, I share it. I’ve had Pupils help me find my pen when I forget it, and I see the way they relate to me, it really matters.”
Support and belonging
Surya shared how open she was during her interview, and how supported she’s felt since joining Phoenix.
“Julie and Jamie were fantastic from day one. Everyone here has been great. I know I can ask for help if I need it, and that’s what makes all the difference.”
Why neurodiversity awareness matters
Surya ended with a powerful reminder:
“Society isn’t built for Neurodiverse People. It’s often us who have to adjust. But with awareness and understanding, that can change. Being diagnosed helped me understand how my brain works, and that’s been life-changing, both personally and professionally.”
At Phoenix, we believe in creating inclusive spaces where Neurodiverse Team Members can thrive.
We’re grateful to Surya for sharing her story so openly.
