This International Workers’ Day, we’re celebrating the power of diversity, resilience and growth.
We spoke to Alla, a valued Team Member at Phoenix, who joined us shortly after arriving in the UK from Ukraine.
Alla’s journey is one of strength, determination and career progression. Here’s her story: in her own words.
Three years ago today, I arrived in England with my 12-year-old daughter after leaving Ukraine. We had to leave the north-east part of the country, where the war had just begun, and life changed overnight.
It was difficult to leave my home, family, and career behind, but my professional life has always been important to me. So, once we had found safety, I started looking for work in the UK.
I found a temporary HR Admin role at Phoenix in my second month. It felt like the perfect match, I had HR experience back home, and Phoenix immediately stood out as a place with strong values and welcoming People.
After three months, I applied for a permanent Payroll Admin role. I stayed there for two years before moving into my Finance Assistant role. Career development, growth and learning new things have always motivated me, which is why I’m also studying accountancy.
Working at Phoenix has helped me grow personally and professionally. I’ve been involved in different parts of the organisation, which has given me a deeper understanding of how we support People.
What I love most about Ukrainian culture is our determination and strong work ethic. I carry this with me daily, especially when solving problems (which sometimes feels like doing an escape room!) and being part of a supportive team.
There’s one Ukrainian word I wish more People knew: незламність. It means resilience or determination. It reflects the spirit of the Ukrainian People, and it’s helped me through the past three years.
Today, on International Workers’ Day, I’m celebrating not only my 3-year anniversary in the UK, but also the strength and diversity of people from all walks of life.
To everyone finding their place, growing their career, or supporting others on their journey — I see you.
