Leading with Pride: Fuad’s Reflections on Heritage and Empowerment

At Phoenix, we take time during Black History Month to celebrate the achievements, heritage and stories of our Team Members. This month, we spoke with Fuad, who shared his reflections on what being Black means to him, his Nigerian heritage, and how culture shapes his values and leadership.

Fuad proudly identifies as Yoruba, one of Nigeria’s largest ethnic groups, known for its vibrant language, rich storytelling and deep moral values.

“From an early age, I was taught the importance of Omolúàbí,” Fuad explained. “It means being a person of good character, integrity and kindness. These values guide everything I do.”

Fuad carries this belief into his everyday life and work. Integrity, kindness and good character are more than words; they are principles that help him build trust and connection with the People we support and his colleagues.

What being Black means

When asked what being Black means to him, Fuad spoke with heartfelt pride:

“Being Black is a source of deep pride and strength. It means carrying the legacy of resilience and brilliance of those who came before us, those who opened doors for people like me.”

Fuad described Black identity as belonging to a global community that is “powerful, creative and unbreakable.” His words remind us that celebrating Black History Month is not only about reflecting on the past, but also about recognising the ongoing achievements and contributions of Black People everywhere.

Shared traditions and community

Fuad highlighted the shared connection between African and Caribbean communities through storytelling, celebration and respect.

“No matter where we are in the world, our traditions unite us. Food, dance and laughter bring us together,” he said.

He spoke warmly about the friendly banter between Nigerians and Ghanaians, a sign of the close bonds across cultures. Fuad also shared how he encourages others to be proud of their identity and to believe in their potential.

“We must celebrate each other’s successes, reflect on our losses and move forward as a stronger community.”

What Black History Month means

For Fuad, Black History Month is both a celebration and a moment for reflection.

“It’s a time to honour the resilience and achievements of Black People throughout history,” he said. “We remember the sacrifices of those who paved the way, and we use their stories to inspire the next generation.”

Fuad sees this as a period to educate, uplift and unite, across all communities. He uses the month to share knowledge, challenge stereotypes and promote inclusion.

“No matter the colour of our skin, we are all human. Black History Month reminds us of that shared humanity.”

Inspired by great leaders

Fuad draws inspiration from leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama, both examples of courage, resilience and compassion.

“Mandela showed that leadership can transform lives and communities. Obama proved that determination can break any barrier,” Fuad shared.

Their stories inspire Fuad’s own ambitions. He hopes to become a manager at Phoenix and continue breaking boundaries for others to follow.

“If Phoenix has never had a Black manager before, I want to be the first. I want others to see that no matter your colour, you can achieve your goals.”

Flourishing in leadership

Fuad is currently part of Phoenix’s Flourish Leadership Programme, which helps Team Members grow in confidence and develop leadership skills.

“Leadership is about service,” he said. “It’s about lifting people, building trust, and creating spaces where everyone feels valued and empowered.”

He believes his Yoruba values - community, resilience and respect - shape his leadership style.

“For me, leadership isn’t about authority, it’s about bringing people together to make positive change.”

Fuad also reflected on how supported he feels at Phoenix, especially as a practising Muslim. During Ramadan, his manager and Team made sure he had time to pray and celebrate Eid.

“The support I get makes me feel like I’m in the right place, part of a family.”

Celebrating Black excellence every day

Fuad’s story embodies what Black History Month stands for: heritage, pride and leadership. His journey reminds us that inclusion and respect are not only values, but actions that strengthen our community.

At Phoenix, we are proud to celebrate Fuad and all our incredible Team Members who inspire others every day.
