At Phoenix, we’re marking Movember by shining a light on men’s health and wellbeing and celebrating positive male role models who inspire our Pupils every day.
This week, we spoke with Jake, a Teacher at Acorn School, about what it means to support young people, promote self-belief, and challenge stereotypes around masculinity.
Finding Joy in Every Achievement
For Jake, the best part of teaching is seeing Pupils succeed beyond their own expectations.
“Seeing Pupils achieve things they never thought they could. That moment when they start believing in themselves is the most rewarding part.”
He explains that self-belief doesn’t happen overnight — it’s built through trust, patience, and encouragement.
“I celebrate small wins and show them that progress takes time. I believe in them until they start to believe it too.”
Redefining Strength Through Kindness
As a positive male role model, Jake wants to show Pupils that real strength comes from empathy, respect, and accountability.
“It’s about showing respect, emotional awareness, and strength through kindness. Real strength is being open, supportive, and responsible.”
He demonstrates these values daily — by being consistent, friendly, and fair.
“I listen without judgment and use setbacks as learning moments. Staying positive helps Pupils see that challenges can lead to growth.”
Making Learning Meaningful
Jake believes that when education connects with real life, Pupils are more motivated and engaged.
“I make learning relevant by linking it to their interests and real-life experiences. I show them that skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and communication are valuable beyond school.”
For Pupils who find learning difficult, he focuses on creating stability and understanding.
“I adapt lessons to their needs and create a supportive environment where every Pupil can thrive.”
Wellbeing and Self-Care
As we reflect on Movember’s message, Jake reminds us that wellbeing must come first, for both Pupils and educators.
“Your mental and physical health should always come first, everything else builds from there.”
He’s also mindful of his own wellbeing:
“I keep clear boundaries between work and home, stay active, and spend time with family and friends. It keeps me balanced.”
The Importance of Positive Role Models
Jake knows how powerful it is for Pupils to see caring, communicative men in education.
“It helps challenge old stereotypes and shows that men can be nurturing, resilient, and focused on wellbeing.”
That’s one of the reasons he’s proud to work At Phoenix.
“It’s a supportive place where everyone, Pupils and Team Members, can grow and succeed.”
A Message for Movember
To all our Pupils, Jake shares this heartfelt reminder:
“You are your biggest asset. Look after your mind like you do your body. Talk, listen, and never be ashamed to care for yourself and others.”
