  • Job Title: Speech and Language Therapist

Job Location: Oakwood College, Dawlish (EX7)

    Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: Salary: £25,908.75 – £31,547.25 per annum (Term Time Only)

You'll receive a pro rata salary based on a full-time equivalent of £32,077.50 – £39,058.50 per annum, offering the benefit of school holiday periods while working in a rewarding term-time-only role.

What does a typical week look like as a Speech and Language Therapist?

Every day brings something different, rewarding, and impactful. You'll start the morning with a team briefing, sharing updates and celebrating the progress our learners are making while staying connected with the wider multidisciplinary team.

From there, your day could involve delivering a 1:1 therapy session, facilitating an engaging group intervention, or supporting communication development within the classroom environment. Whatever the setting, you'll play a vital role in helping learners with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism develop the skills, confidence, and independence they need to thrive.

When you're not working directly with learners, you'll have dedicated time to collaborate with team members and make a lasting impact across the wider educational team. This includes providing training and practical guidance to teaching teams, helping them embed effective communication strategies into everyday learning. You'll also work closely with our onsite Creative Arts Therapist, ensuring a joined-up and holistic therapeutic approach that delivers the best outcomes for every learner.

As part of our multidisciplinary team, you'll attend meetings with parents, teachers, and external professionals, contributing your expertise to create tailored support plans that enable learners to reach their full potential.

We're equally committed to your professional development. You'll benefit from protected learning time, regular clinical supervision, and ongoing support from experienced therapists. Whether you're building confidence in new clinical skills or progressing through your competency framework, you'll be encouraged and supported every step of the way.

And while clinical documentation is an important part of the role, it won't define your day. We believe your time is best spent making a difference where it matters most with learners, Team Members, and families, supported by the systems and structure you need to succeed.

A day in the life of a Speech and Language Therapist will involve:

    • Taking a trauma informed approach to clinical work. You’ll work with a small caseload of learners who will have varying Learning, Communication, sensory processing, and social interaction needs. You’ll be able to do this through 1-2-1 support, classroom work and group sessions.
    • Working with the wider team to offer the best support to our learners, including our onsite creative art therapists, teachers, and teaching assistants, and taking part in Multidisciplinary team meetings.
    • Administration. Whilst doing all your great work with the learners, we’ll need you to keep their records up to date and carry out all the administrative tasks you’d expect to come with this role. Don’t worry though, during the school holidays you can work from home so that you have the space to do this without it impacting the time you spend with the learners.

To be a successful Speech and Language Therapist, you’ll need:

    • A recognised Degree in Speech and Language Therapy, along with HCPC Registration and membership with the Royal College of Speech and Language.
    • Good IT skills – We’ll train you on how to use our systems, but it would help if you had a working understanding of using Microsoft packages like Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams.
    • A full driving licence. Whilst this role is based in a single location, there will be times that you need to attend meetings offsite which would require the use of a vehicle.

If you have experience working within the NHS, the best way for us to describe the level of experience needed for this role would be to consider it a “Band 5” position.

In return for your time, you’ll get:

    • Holidays – You’ll get 28 days annual leave, including public holidays.
    • Pension scheme– Our pension scheme is based on you paying in 5%, and us adding 3%.
    • Learning & Development Opportunities – We provide comprehensive learning opportunities for team members to develop themselves.
    • Discounts – You’ll have access to brilliant discounts through the Blue Light Card and our own employee benefits platform.
    • Wellbeing Support – Your wellbeing is always our priority. You’ll have access to mental health and wellbeing support. On top of this, our therapies team offers a monthly confidential check in clinic, and group reflective practice sessions.
    • Cycle2Work -The cycle to work scheme enables you to buy a bicycle at a discounted rate.
    • DBS – As this role required you to have an enhanced DBS carried out, we will cover this cost.
    • After 12 months service - You’ll also be eligible for our Medicash scheme which covers a wide range of medical, health and wellbeing expenses (Including immediate access to a GP!). You’ll get life assurance paid at x2 your annual salary.

Please note that as part of our safer recruitment processes, successful applicants will be subject to pre-employment checks including an enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS) check, and online and social media checks, and reference validation.
